Judge Aaron Persky of State Superior Court was heavily criticized after sentencing Brock Turner, who sexually assaulted an unconscious woman, to only six months in jail. Prosecutors pushed for a six-year prison sentence, but Persky went with the country probation department’s recommendation of a six month jail sentence.

The recall campaign was led by Michele Dauber, a Standard Law School professor who says she is a family friend of the victim.

“We voted that sexual violence, including campus sexual violence, must be taken seriously by our elected officials, and by the justice system,” she said.
