Kate Spade’s Sister Says Suicide Was “Not Unexpected”

In an email sent to NBC News, Reta Saffo said that the suicide death of her younger sister, fashion icon Kate Spade, was “not unexpected.” She said that Spade struggled with mental illness.

“She was surrounded by ‘yes’ people, for far too long, therefore she did not receive the proper care for what I believe to be (and tried numerous times to get her help for) bipolar disorder … stemming from her immense celebrity,” Saffo wrote.

A source close to the family shot back at Saffo, saying that she was “estranged for the entire family for more than 10 years” and “did not know her at all.”
