melons

Don’t purchase pre-cut fruit, friends.

In Wisconsin, residents are being warned not to eat Costco’s pre-cut melons and the mixed-fruit salads that include them. Supplied by Caito Foods, the melons have been sickening people in multiple states.

Over 30 people have been hospitalized in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio after becoming ill from eating the melons. They were also sold in Iowa, Georgia, Kentucky and North Carolina. Stores that sold the contaminated melons include Costco, Kroger, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart and Whole Foods.

Melons include watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe and fresh-cut fruit salads where they appear.

Most people infected with salmonella recover without treatment within a week of symptoms beginning. The elderly, infants and people with weak immune systems are especially susceptible to severe illness.
