European Union to Impose Import Tariffs on a Number of US Goods

The European Union is retaliating against President Donald Trump’s tariffs on European steel and aluminum by imposing their own tariffs on American goods. The initial $3.2 billion charges are a direct response to the US decision.

The tariffs will affect a number of products such as Bourbon whiskey, motorcycles, denim jeans and cranberry juice. American metal exports will also be affected.

“We did not want to be in this position. However, the unilateral and unjustified decision of the US to impose steel and aluminum tariffs on the EU means that we are left with no other choice,” said Trade commissioner Cecilia Malmström.

Whether this move will escalate a response from the Trump administration remains to be seen.
