China Puts a Cap on Celebrity Salaries to Combat ‘Money Worship’

Chinese celebrities may have to cut back on their lifestyles a bit…

China is capping the salaries of celebrities, accusing the entertainment industry of encouraging “money worship” and “distorting social values.” Going forward, on-screen performers will be capped at 40% of the total production costs, and leading actors will receive no more than 70% of the total cast wages.

This comes on the heels of some tax evasion scandals brought to light by a Chinese TV presenter. Apparently, some actors were partaking in “yin-yang contracts” where they would be given two contracts with very different salary levels. The celebrities would then only report the lower contract to tax authorities.
