The Department of Justice has approved Disney’s bid to purchase the media assets of 21st Century Fox, but there is one condition.
Since Disney owns ESPN, the government believes that if Disney took over Fox’s local sports programming, it could constitute a monopoly on sports broadcasting. In some markets, Fox Sports and ESPN are direct competitors.
The decision means that the Disney/Fox deal can move forward. 21st Century Fox must decide whether they will accept Disney’s offer or entertain Disney’s bidding rival, Comcast.
