President Trump took to Twitter again on Sunday to air his frustration over not getting his border wall and called for a merit-based immigration system. “I would be willing to ‘shut down’ government,” he said, if Democrats didn’t join Republicans in voting for those measures.
This isn’t the first time Trump has made remarks on a shutdown. Back in February, he said “I’d love to see a shutdown,” if immigration wasn’t addressed by the government. With funding running out in September and the midterms looming shortly thereafter, a shutdown could work against the GOP.
A few Republican lawmakers have said in interviews that they want to avoid a shutdown, and some did not feel that it was a likely scenario.
