Urban Meyer, head football coach at Ohio State University, has been suspended for three games without pay because he “failed to take sufficient management action relating to Zach Smith’s misconduct.” Athletic Director Gene Smith has also been suspended from August 31 to September 16 for the same reasons.
“I should have done more and I am sorry for that,” Meyer said. Smith was fired on July 23, just three days after he was served with a civil protection order by his ex-wife, Courtney Smith. She accused Smith of abuse, including domestic violence for incidents that occurred in 2009 and 2015.
Meyer admitted to knowing about the 2009 incident but said he wasn’t aware of what happened in 2015. Courtney Smith stated that she told Meyer’s wife about the 2015 incident. Zach Smith said that he discussed the 2015 incident with Urban Meyer as well.
