There were three remaining Madden Classic qualifier events scheduled in Virginia, California and Texas, but EA Sports, the maker of the venerable football videogame franchise, has canceled them to review safety protocols.
The cancellation comes on the heels of the shooting in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday where a player who had lost a game came back with a gun and targeted other players. He killed two people and wounded 10 others before turning the gun on himself.
“We’ve all been deeply affected by what took place in Jacksonville,” said EA Sports CEO Andrew Wilson in a statement. “This is the first time we’ve had to confront something like this as an organization, and I believe the first time our gaming community has dealt with a tragedy of this nature.”
