Hurricane Florence is nearing Category 5 strength and the southern East Coast is in serious danger. More than a million people along coastal areas of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina are under mandatory evacuation orders.

The coast will begin to see hurricane force winds on Thursday evening as the storm begins to make landfall. Even inland areas such as Raleigh, Charlotte and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, will likely see tropical force winds on Thursday.

According to the National Hurricane Center, hurricane and storm surge watches extend from Edisto Beach, South Carolina, which is just south of Charleston, north to the border of North Carolina and Virginia. Hurricane conditions and “life-threatening inundation from rising water moving inland from the coastline” are expected.
