Monsignor Kenneth Lasch told CNN that he reported an incident that occurred 1985 where a deacon gave alcohol to and abused an 18-year-old parishioner to the Archbishop of Boston and was summarily ignored.
According to Lasch, the parishioner had confided in the deacon that he was thinking about becoming a priest but was concerned about the celibacy obligation. “The priest gave the victim alcohol and groomed him into a friendship. When the young man was home on Christmas vacation, he took him out to dinner and they got drunk and he abused him,” Lasch said. He said that the parishioner went into “a tailspin” after that and suffered emotional damage and trauma.
The deacon, whom Lasch did not name, has since been promoted to priesthood and is serving in Patterson, New Jersey.
