Hurricane Florence made landfall at 7:15 am, pounding the coast of North Carolina with effects felt in South Carolina.
Meteorologists fear that the center of the storm may linger for up to a day while dumping 3 inches of rain per hour. Wind speeds on the Category 1 hurricane have dropped to 90 mph but are still fast enough to be dangerous.
Within a few hours, rescuers had already pulled 100 people from rising waters in New Bern, NC, with another 150 being forced to wait it out when conditions worsened. Some 437,000 customers in North and South Carolina have lost power.
