Gas Explosion in Massachusetts Leaves One Dead, Dozens Injured

A series of gas explosions in three towns north of Boston killed one person and injured at least 25 others.

The explosions created fires seemingly at random in Andover, North Andover and Lawrence. One fire chief said that it “looked like armageddon.” Officials have not determined the cause yet. The local utility company had announced plans to upgrade natural gas lines in the area.

The fatality occurred when a house exploded, sending the chimney flying into a nearby car that was occupied by 18-year-old Leonel Rondon and two friends. Rondon died later at the hospital from debris injuries.
