According to media projections, incumbent New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will handily win the Democratic nomination for a third term, beating his progressive opponent, actress Cynthia Nixon.
Nixon spent her campaign attacking Cuomo and pushing for universal rent control, single-payer healthcare, more funding for public education and fixes to New York City’s antiquated subway system.
Cuomo, with his deep pockets and many supporters, largely ignored Nixon and focused on Trump. He is a solid establishment candidate who will face off against Republican Marc Molinaro in the November general election.
