A new report by the Media Research Center, which analyzed over 1000 evening newscasts on ABC, NBC and CBS from June 1 to September 30 showed a definitely negative bias towards Trump coverage.
The MRC report shows that nearly two-thirds of coverage on World News Tonight (ABC), Nightly News (NBC) and Evening News (CBS) focused on what the MRC called “TV’s Trump-bashing agenda.” Common stories focused on Brett Kavanaugh, North Korean diplomacy and, of course, Russia – but not in a positive light.
“The networks’ coverage of all of these topics has been highly negative, while bright spots for the administration such as the booming economy received extremely little coverage,” said MRC’s senior editor Rich Noyes.
The study shows that Russia got the lion’s share of negative coverage during the sample period of four months.
“Virtually all of that coverage has been negative, while almost none of it has focused on any of the controversies involving Mueller or his investigative team,” Noyes wrote.
By mid-September, Kavanaugh became the hottest topic, with allegations against him being covered eight times more than his judicial record or philosophy.
Trump has long claimed that mainstream media does not treat him fairly. This seems to bear out in other polls conducted by The Hill and HarrisX which found that 45 percent of voters thought that Kavanaugh’s coverage was biased against him.
While the American economy booms, the mainstream media seems to look the other way unless there is a negative angle that they can exploit.
“The only aspect of the Trump economic program that interested the networks during the past four months has been the President’s use of tariffs to push better trade deals,” Noyes wrote. But even then, he added that “coverage of Trump’s trade policy emphasized the downside.”
