The SAG awards took place on Sunday, January 27, and with that came some surprises. The categories are focused entirely on the performers, unlike other award ceremonies that include visual effects and music.

Categories include things like “outstanding performance by leading male role,” and “outstanding performance by a female in TV series.”

SAG Snubs

While A Star is Born was a massive hit critically and at the box office, it received no love here. Although nominated to four categories, they ended up being overshadowed by films such as Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Rami Malek of Bohemian Rhapsody beat Bradley Cooper, and Glenn Close bested Lady Gaga with her performance in The Wife. We’re sure they will both be content with how well their films performed at the box office, of course.

Marvel Mania

Marvel showed up big at the SAG awards, being nominated to multiple categories and winning two of them. The first category was an award for the entire cast, and Black Panther’s performers won out against tough competition. Runner-ups included the actors in Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star is Born, and Crazy Rich Asians.

Black Panther’s actors aren’t the only ones that saw success at the SAG Awards, though. The Stunt Ensemble for the popular superhero film also won Best Action Performance. Two other Marvel movies were in this category, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Avengers: Infinity War.

Maybe a Little Too Marvelous

Some TV series received nominations across multiple categories, such as Ozark and The Handmaid’s Tale. However, one was significantly more successful at the SAG Awards than the others.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ended up winning three separate categories and having two nominations in the outstanding female lead category. They won awards for best male actor, best female actor and entire ensemble for TV comedy.

Other Winners

Jason Bateman won out in the best male actor for his performance in the drama Ozark. Although the female actors in Ozark received multiple nominations, they were overshadowed by Sandra Oh in Killing Eve.

Darren Criss and Patricia Arquette also received awards for Assassination of Gianni Versace and Escape at Dannemora, respectively. While The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won out in comedy, the ensemble of This is Us won out in the drama category.
