President Donald Trump doubled down this morning, insisting he will not authorize the release of his tax returns to Congress.
“I’m not gonna do it while I’m under audit,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
Trump’s refusal is likely to prompt a major legal battle, as Congress attempts to determine whether it has the authority to review his financial records.
Meanwhile, IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig confirmed at a House Appropriations Subcommittee yesterday that there is “no rule that would prohibit the release of tax returns because it’s under audit.”
Last week, attorneys for President Trump dismissed calls to release his tax returns in a letter sent to the Department of Treasury counsel, in which they alleged that the request was politically motivated.
