Mayor Pete Buttigieg Announces 2020 Presidential Campaign – Who He Is, and Why It Matters

Pete Buttigieg, 37, famously known as “Mayor Pete” has officially announced his 2020 bid to run for President of the United States. The significance of this, if elected, is that he will become the first openly gay President that has ever occupied the White House.

On Sunday, Buttigieg announced, “My name is Pete Buttigieg.  They call me Mayor Pete.  I am a proud son of South Bend, Indiana.  And I am running for President of the United States.”

He continued, “I recognize the audacity of doing this as a Midwestern millennial mayor. More than a little bold – at age 37 – to seek the highest office of the land…  but we live in a moment that compels each of us to act.”

Who is Pete Buttigieg?

The thing about Pete Buttigieg is that he wasn’t all that well-known until a month ago, but he is quickly becoming one of the most popular of a large field of Democrats who are lining up to take on President Trump in 2020.

In case you’re wondering, the correct way to pronounce his last name is, “Boot-edge-edge.”

A Different Kind of Politician

Pete Buttigieg wants to run as a “different kind of politician”, in a direct rebuttal to Trump’s own campaign.  Instead of making American great “again”, he wants to instead focus on looking ahead; not backward.

“The national media often misrepresents us as part of the country where looking backward is all we know how to do”, said Buttigieg. “There’s no such thing as ‘again’ – you can’t turn back the clock.”

“I’m from the Midwest, so these issues of making sure that we have a positive way forward for workers and families in the industrial Midwest – this is not theoretical for me, it’s my home.”

More Years of Experience Than the President

In a statement about his age being an issue, Buttigieg said, “I have more years of government experience under my belt than the President.  That’s a low bar.  I know that.  I also have had more years of executive government experience than the Vice President.”

Pete Buttigieg is known for his ability to speak several different languages, and is a former U.S. Navy intelligence officer, a graduate from Harvard University and he also graduated from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.
