Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, announced he is making a criminal referral to the Justice Department for Blackwater founder Erik Prince, claiming that he lied to Congress.
“I do believe that there is very strong evidence that he willingly mislead the committee and made false statements to the committee,” Schiff said, “and later today we’re going to make a criminal referral to the Justice Department.”
Prince is the brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, as well as, an ally and informal campaign advisor of President Donald Trump.
Whether or not the Department of Justice (DOJ) will decide to prosecute Prince remains unclear.
There is the possibility that the evidence Schiff is referring to that reveals Prince misled the committee, may have been a result of his proffer sessions with special counsel Robert Mueller, which if that turns out to be the case, may protect him from charges.
