Viral sensation and famed internet legend Grumpy Cat passed away on Tuesday at the age of 7.
Her death came as the result of complications that followed a urinary tract infection.
The illustrious feline was world-renowned for her always-sour facial expression that made her famous online. Before she was even a year old, she’d become a meme superstar after her photo blew up on Reddit.
The cat, who was actually named Tardar Sauce, was soon making promotional appearances and starring in commercials, making her family millions. She had a branding deal with Friskies, a line of cat toys, and even a TV-movie deal, co-starring Aubrey Plaza.
A mixed breed, Grumpy Cat’s iconic expression was caused by a combination of an underbite and feline dwarfism.
Tabatha Bundesen, Tardar’s owner was a waitress at Red Lobster prior to Grumpy Cat becoming a viral phenomenon.
On Friday, the Bundesen family posted the news on social media.
“Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome,” read the Twitter post. “She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.”
“Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world—even when times are tough.”
Though Tardar Sauce has crossed the rainbow bridge, her many memes will surely remain with us forever. Or, in the words of her family, “Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.”
