Last night, peace was finally declared in one of the most epic conflicts of our time. No, it had nothing to do with the Middle East. Katy Perry and Taylor Swift finally called off the feud that fueled more than one angry song for the rival pop stars.
Here’s what happened, plus a timeline of their long, twisty relationship!
In Happier Times
Way back in 2008, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift seemed to have nothing but nice things to say about each other. They hung out at award shows, tweeted sweet messages at each other, and even suggested collaborating on a song together. This went on for a couple of years as both of them rose through the Billboard charts.
So what happened? Was it that Katy started dating Taylor’s ex, John Mayer? (And be honest, you forgot that ever happened.) Was it that 3 of Taylor’s backup dancers left her for Katy?
In 2014, Taylor told Rolling Stone that “Bad Blood” was about a certain fellow singer who treated her badly:
“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?'”
Katy Perry fired back after the interview hit newsstands with a ferocious tweet: “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing…”
The feud continued to simmer, with Katy releasing the track “Swish Swish” in 2017 to slam Taylor. Although, if we’re being honest, Taylor Swift is much, much better at controlling the social media narrative and rounding up famous friends to appear in her music videos. Sorry, Katy.
Forgiveness, Cats, and Cookies
For whatever reason, the ice between them began to thaw in 2018. Katy sent Taylor a note containing a literal olive branch–nobody ever accused her of being subtle–and Taylor posted a pic of it on Instagram.
More recently, the pair seemed to find some common ground in the form of adorable cats. Katy liked a picture that Tay tweeted of her newest kitten, Benjamin Buttons. And eagle-eyed social media sleuths noticed that one of Katy’s recent Instagram photos seemed to have been taken inside Taylor’s house!
Now, it’s official: the feud is over. On Tuesday, Katy posted a picture of a plate of homemade cookies with the message “Peace At Last” written in red icing around the rim.
Although the location was listed as “Let’s Be Friends,” the photo was definitely taken in Taylor’s kitchen. We’ve seen that specific marble countertop in some of her own pictures and videos. Did they bake the cookies together? Was there actual “Kumbayaa” sung as the hostilities finally ceased?
We may never know the details of what went down between the two pop stars, but it seems like we can all rest easy in the knowledge that there’s a little less bad blood in the world.
