Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve likely seen plenty of people talking about storming Area 51. What began as a satirical joke has significantly evolved.
It started off as a Facebook event: ‘Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us.’ Soon, it had caught the attention of over half a million people. And with that level of interest, it attracted even more attention and went completely viral.
Too Much Hype
Now, the notion of storming Area 51 is consistently trending on multiple social platforms. Alien memes are popping up everywhere, and even some celebrities have jumped on the bandwagon.
However, the man who initially proposed the plan is now starting to worry that things are getting out of hand. He even told CNN that he worried the FBI might show up at his house.
That man is Matty Roberts, and he says the joke was inspired by podcaster Joe Rogan. More specifically, the idea came after hearing Rogan’s interview with Area 51 whistleblower Bob Lazar and documentary filmmaker Jeremy Corbell. Roberts simply thought the Facebook event would be funny.
And while he doesn’t expect an actual raid to occur, he does think there’s potential for a much safer event.
