These world leaders didn’t know they were being recorded this week as they talked opening during the NATO summit in London, sharing jokes and drinks about their favorite United States president, Donald Trump.
Filmed Tuesday evening, none of the leaders in the video seem aware they’re being recorded. But they certainly aren’t hiding the fact they’re speaking with each other, and their voices are loud enough to carry.
Trump, after seeing the viral video this morning, had strong words to say not just about Trudeau, but all the leaders in attendance. It seems this London party, thrown by the Queen herself, was not enough to sway the president’s opinion on NATO.
The video is just 25 seconds long, but it is spreading across the internet like wildfire.
The footage shows Boris Johnson, Justin Trudeau, and Emmanuel Macron at Buckingham Palace, holding drinks and talking like old friends.
Johnson asked Macron, “Is that why he was late?” Macron appears to start to respond, but Trudeau cuts him off, saying “He was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top”. Trudeau then adds, “oh yeah, yeah yeah, he announced…” before Macron interrupts.
Because of Macron’s position, we can’t hear what is being said, but he speaks in an enthusiastic and animated way to the group of men.
There is zero mention of Trump by name, but anyone listening in can tell who the group of men are talking about – especially considering that Trump had an unscripted 50-minute press conference with reporters on Tuesday.
“You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor,” Trudeau said later in the private conversation between the men.
Donald Trump isn’t just upset about this exchange, he’s absolutely furious. It’s rare we see the President quite so worked up outside of his Twitter-verse, but this has gotten him mad.
Today, when asked if he had seen the footage, Donald Trump had scathing words about the leader. “Well, he’s two-faced,” He explained. “Honestly, with Trudeau, he’s a nice guy, I find him to be a very nice guy. But you know the truth is that I called him out on the fact he’s not paying 2%, and I guess he’s not very happy about it. … he should be paying more than he’s paying.”
Despite joking with reporters about his former desire to purchase Greenland later, Trump says that he plans on cutting his trip to the UK short and canceling the press conference scheduled for the afternoon.
On Twitter this morning, he said, “When today’s meetings are over, I will be heading back to Washington. We won’t be doing a press conference at the close of NATO because we did so many over the past two days.”
Many in the media wonder if that’s because he’s ready to be back home… or because of Trudeau’s snarky comments on the length and quality of his previous press conferences?
